With the start of the new millennium, the Center for Publishing launched a new concentration in "Electronic Publishing" for the Master of Science in Publishing degree. It is an innovative cluster of courses that have been added to the two other areas of book and magazine publishing in the graduate degree program, A special advisory Electronic Publishing Task Group was formed last fall to identify the needs, establish a curriculum and then develop the new courses. The first two courses to be offered are Electronic Content Development and Web Marketing and E-Commerce to be followed in the fall with Magazine and Journal Publishing on the Internet and The Business of Online Publishing. With the development of our master's degree new area of concentration, the NYU Center for Publishing has established itself as the leader in preparing managers for electronic publishing.
On the international front, three faculty members went to China in January to present a special seminar on Managing Organizations during Change to over 200 publishers in Beijing and Shanghai. This challenging event was followed by a new initiative held at NYU's Villa Pietra in Florence in February, a seminar on E-Commerce: New On-line Businesses for Publishers. Four key guest speakers from New York were joined by executives from the European publishing industry to present a unique overview as well as identify trends in e-business on the Internet.
