Prerequisite: Y59.1360/Principles and Applications of Publishing on the Internet

The World Wide Web necessitates a new way of communicating, and this new media needs writers and editors who understand its possibilities and limitations, and who can visualize its interactivity. This course is an overview for writers and editors interested in new media which will cover a range of skills including content research and development, storyboarding and flowcharting, scriptwriting, hypertext and voiceover, style and rhythm, repurposing, and localization. Writers and editors will study how to adapt skills used in other media to the Web, and how to write and edit material informed by the design and technical possibilities inherent in the new media. Students will look at several industry specific case studies, e.g. world news, financial news, forums, etc., to examine writing styles and interface design. Finally, the editorial process and development will be explored by reviewing how work flow operates in a multimedia and digital environment.
