The Business of Online Publishing

Prerequisite: Y59.1360/Principles and Applications of Publishing on the Internet and Y59.1150/Financial Analysis, Controls and Accounting in Publishing

This course is designed to equip managers with the necessary knowledge and tools for developing and running a profitable online business. Students will learn how to develop a business plan for an online company which will include evaluating income, expenses, overhead and profit projections unique to multimedia technology subject to continued changes. Additional topics that will be covered are: different types of revenue streams, identifying products, financing projects, cash flow problems and venture capital funds as well as quantifying digital assets. Case studies will be the backbone of the course. Students will closely examine companies like Time Warner's Pathfinder, DejaNews, WallStreet.com and Bloomberg.com as examples of online businesses. All aspects of their business will be rigorously examined in order for students to understand successful financial models.
