Prerequisite: Y59.1360/Principles and Applications of Publishing on the Internet
This course covers issues in newspaper, magazine and journal publishing for the scientific, technical and professional markets on the web. It will be a matter of looking at practical issues such as repurposing content, digital publishing workflow techniques, streamlining the peer review process, tools and strategies for the timely updating of content, traffic analysis, and the role of databases in the publishing effort. Emerging business models and strategies such as the creation of virtual communities are examined through a number of case studies. The economies of pay per view and subscription model in relation to content development are two further management issues covered. The role of the Internet will be examined in traditional newspaper, magazine and journal publishing including topics such as "getting it" - why established magazines frequently fail to achieve their web goals, and managing "evergreen" and time sensitive subject matter.
