For individuals considering careers as literary agents and for editors, authors, and others who deal regularly with agents, this course offers a complete introduction to the field. Topics include: an overall view of the agent s role and functions; how to become an agent; steps in the acquiring process; specifics of contracts and contract negotiations; subsidiary rights; genre publishing; packaging; and the editor s perspective on the agent s role. Special attention is given to recent changes in the book publishing industry and their effects on agents, editors, and authors. The course includes simulation exercises and guest speakers. 1.5 CEU.
