This course discusses major legal issues in book publishing. Topics include: introduction to first amendment and copyright law, with special emphasis on the impact of new technology; fair use and parody in light of recent Supreme Court decisions; and introduction to the torts of defamation, invasion of privacy, violation of the right of publicity, and infliction of emotional distress. Gives an overview of trademark law and the impact of price discrimination, antitrust, and unfair com petition laws on the publisher. Concludes with an in-depth discussion of the standard publishing contract. 2.0 CEU.
