This introductory course presents the step-by-step process by which an author s words become a book in the hands of a reader. The book is followed from conception to its submission by a literary agent; the contract negotiations leading to its acquisition by an editor; through the editorial process to design and production; to its marketing via publicity, promotion, advertising, sales, special sales, and subsidiary rights sales; and into the bookstore. The interaction among publishing functions is emphasized. The primary focus of the course is trade publishing, i.e., the publishing of books meant to appeal to the general reader. 2.5 CEU.
