The Internet has become a major focus of the computing industry as it revolutionizes the way people conduct business. The primary growth area of the Internet has been in the business community, with more than 75 percent of all new users logging on via corporate connections. There is a high demand for people with the technical skills to build and maintain linkages throughout this network and the programming and creative skills to create content for it. Creating, Publishing, and Maintaining a World Wide Web Server on the Internet.

This intensive, fast-paced, hands-on course, held in a state-of-the-art laboratory, provides students with a comprehensive, solid foundation in Internet/World Wide Web technologies and business applications. Students examine the various communications options available for network connectivity, including TCP/IP, SLIP, and PPP. They learn how to install and maintain a World Wide Web server, as well as how to create content for this engine.

Areas covered include:

HTML, HTTP, CGI.
Setting up an Internet server (HTTPD, WinHTTP, and MacHTTP).
Using personal computers on the Web, including Macintosh, PC, and UNIX workstations.
Configuring HTTPD, security, and firewall issues.

Using Internet tools such as FTP, Archie, WAIS, mailing lists, and Usenet News. Students also learn how to script Web pages with HTML. They have the opportunity to create dynamic Web pages using CGI to build fill-in forms, search engines, and custom pages.

In addition, issues concerning Internet demographics, how business can utilize the Internet, and how to conduct business over the Internet are explored.

Silicon Alley, Wall Street, television, advertising, and publishing, among many industries, provide NYU with an exceptional faculty pool. Students work with a faculty body comprised of professionals who have led the world in Internet technologies. NYU's Multimedia Program is one of the foremost programs nationwide and draws students from countries all over the world. Students in this summer program study with the most experienced Internet professionals working with the top multinational corporations.

Who Should Apply

This summer intensive program is geared for students/professionals looking to acquire a solid, technical skill set in order to make themselves marketable in industry, working with the World Wide Web. These students/professionals construct a final portfolio project that can be taken into industry as one testimony of their ability.

Schedule

Class meets for two weeks, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuition

The total noncredit tuition is $3,165, including a nonrefundable $20 registration fee. The cost excludes transportation, housing, and meals.

Students are eligible to stay in NYU dormitories during the summer session.
