Tammy Deuster, Founder and CEO Bookface.com
-You have a very diverse resume -- an engineering background plus an MBA from Harvard Business School and technology expertise from Inktomi, an Internet infrastructure company. How did you end up in publishing?
I ended it up in publishing the same way most people doÖI love books. Iím fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute at a time while there is a dramatic need for technologists to get involved with publishing. As more readers spend more time on the Internet seeking entertainment and information, it is absolutely imperative that books are available online. Books are an incredible source of inspiration and knowledge; I donít want books to lose in the competition for peopleís time and attention. That is why at Bookface we are building technology to help publishers deliver book content on the Internet where more people are spending increasing amounts of time.
-Could you tell me more about Bookface?
Our company provides security for book content that works directly in the browser. When launched, our website, www.Bookface.com, will deliver the ultimate reading experience to Internet users -- actually opening books online. Regardless of whether readers are logging into the Internet via Mac, Windows, or Unix machine, they will be able to read whole books via the site. Online reading can be a first step, enabling readers to make informed decisions about a printed book purchase or an eBook download, or a complete solution when someone reads a whole book via the Internet. This is different from eBooks ñ itís a new on-demand solution for both marketing and distribution.
- Why did you pursue the idea of reading books online?
I had a personal desire to find more book content online for several reasons. As an avid Internet user, I found it frustrating that the quality content found in books was not available on the Internet. I needed a library to find in-depth research or a bookstore to find great reading, while tools like searching for books worked much better online. I found myself visiting Amazon.com to make lists of relevant books, then trekking to a Borderís bookstore to actually browse the book before buying. Each time I would say to myself, ìHow can we create a better way to do this?î
-How has the publishing industry reacted to Bookface?
We have found both authors and publishers extremely intrigued by the potential of increasing their reach and revenues by using the Internet. 500,000 downloads in 48 hours for Stephen Kingís Riding the Bullet proves that there is pent-up demand for direct access to quality content. We have been actively developing relationships within the publishing industry in a very short time. Our ability to do this is evidence that the publishing industry is embracing the potential of digital publishing solutions.
-What is your vision for the future of online reading?
Everyone should have direct and instant access to books. Bookface is determined to deliver this vision by creating a solution that offers publishers and authors more money, while giving readers a great reading experience. Bookface will be an essential and complementary part of getting books from authors to readers.
